About Bioenergy

Bioenergy describes energy produced from any organic source, and is the oldest form of energy used for cooking and heating throughout human history. Today there is an increasingly industrialized bioenergy system based on large scale use of solid biomass in heat and power production, and in the production of biogas and liquid transport fuels. In the case of Vireo Energy, we are particularly focused on landfill gas.

Benefits for society

Landfill gas mainly consists of methane which is an efficient fuel, but when released to atmosphere is a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than CO2.

Thus the use of waste-based biogas for energy generation has several positive effects. First, it reduces dependency on fossil fuels which reduces net emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Second, biogas is usually produced from local waste within a certain area or country, which reduces dependency on imported fuels and increases regional and national self-sufficiency.
